You got a junk removal quote over the phone for $500. The crew showed up and they say it’s going to be $750. What happened?
There are a few reasons – here’s what actually drives junk removal pricing:
- Volume is the primary driver of cost. Most companies (including Pittsburgh Junk Company) price by how much truck space your items fill. “A basement’s worth of stuff” over the phone might be a quarter truck or four full trucks — it’s impossible to estimate accurately until we see it. It is human nature to underestimate our own stuff — everyone does it.
- Special items cost extra. Mattresses, tires, TVs, chemicals, and paint carry disposal fees that junk removal companies pay per item. If you didn’t mention these items in advance, the fees will be added on-site.
- Access matters. Third-floor walkup with no elevator? Appliances that need to be disassembled to make it through the door frame? If something will add significant time to the job, an additional fee covers this extra labor.
Pittsburgh Junk Company doesn't want customers to be surprised. Here are the best practices to get an accurate estimate for your job:
- Send photos or a video in advance. Thirty seconds of phone video gets you a far tighter estimate than any verbal description.
- Mention the special items up front. Ask directly: “Are there per-item fees for anything I have?”
- Understand what would change the price. An honest company will tell you exactly what conditions would move the number up or down.
- For some jobs, we prefer to come for an in-person quote. An estate clean-out, a commercial space, or a larger job with tricky access — we’ll stop by to provide a firm price up front, so you know exactly what to expect on the invoice.
Bottom line:
A quote that changes on-site isn’t necessarily a red flag — but a company that can’t explain why it changed is. You should feel comfortable asking questions about pricing so you’re prepared for the final invoice.
